From 'Clasp Locker' to Modern Marvel

The concept of a sliding fastener dates back to Elias Howe, who patented an 'Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure' in 1851 but never commercialized it. The first truly practical design came from American engineer Whitcomb L. Judson, who introduced his 'Clasp Locker' in 1893, showcasing it at the Chicago World's Fair. However, Judson's invention, which used interlocking hooks and eyes, was often unreliable and prone to coming apart.

Gideon Sundback and the Birth of the 'Zipper'

The breakthrough came from Swedish-American electrical engineer Gideon Sundback, who joined Judson's company and significantly improved the design. By 1913, Sundback had developed the 'Separable Fastener,' featuring interlocking metal teeth, which he patented in 1917. Sundback not only perfected the fastener but also invented the machinery to efficiently manufacture it in continuous chains. Curiously, Sundback never called his invention a 'zipper'; that catchy name was coined in 1923 by the B.F. Goodrich Company, inspired by the 'zip' sound their new rubber boots made when fastened with Sundback's device.

From Boots to Boutiques

Initially, zippers found their main applications in practical items like boots and tobacco pouches. It wasn't until the 1930s that they began to gain traction in the fashion industry. Marketing campaigns promoted zippers for children's clothing, touting them as a way to enhance children's independence by making it easier for them to dress themselves. The zipper's widespread adoption in menswear, particularly after its 'Battle of the Fly' triumph over buttons in 1937, solidified its place as a modern wardrobe staple.
