American Innovation and Industrial Influence

A significant step towards the modern two-day weekend occurred in the United States in 1908, when a New England cotton mill instituted the first five-day workweek. This was primarily to accommodate Jewish employees who observed the Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, ensuring they wouldn't have to work on their holy day. The idea gained further traction when industrialist Henry Ford famously began shutting down his automotive factories for all of Saturday and Sunday in 1926.
