The Gladiator Myth: Not So Clear-Cut

For centuries, popular culture, especially Hollywood, has cemented the idea that a Roman emperor’s 'thumbs up' spared a gladiator's life, while 'thumbs down' sealed their doom. This dramatic imagery, powerfully depicted in Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1872 painting 'Pollice Verso,' is widely accepted, yet it's largely a misconception. Ancient Roman sources describe a gesture called 'pollice verso,' meaning 'with a turned thumb,' but the exact direction and meaning remain a subject of intense scholarly debate.

Life or Death: The True Roman Signals

Historians now believe the actual signals for life or death in the Roman arena were more nuanced than a simple up or down. A 'thumbs up' might have actually signified death, resembling a drawn sword, while a 'thumb pressed' or 'hidden thumb' (pollice compresso) could have been the signal for clemency, mimicking a sheathed weapon. The ambiguity of ancient texts allows for various interpretations, suggesting that the clear 'thumbs up for life, thumbs down for death' is a modern projection onto history.

The Rise of Modern Positivity

So, if not from Roman gladiators, where did our modern 'thumbs up' of approval come from? The gesture, as a widespread positive signal, gained significant popularity in the early 20th century. Its use was greatly popularized during World War II, particularly among Allied pilots and military personnel who used it as a non-verbal cue for 'all clear' or 'good to go' in noisy environments. From there, it rapidly spread into everyday communication worldwide, solidifying its place as a universal sign of agreement and positivity.

A World of Meanings

Despite its perceived universality, the thumbs-up gesture still carries vastly different meanings across cultures. While generally positive in Western countries, it can be considered highly offensive in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa, and Latin America, equivalent to a vulgar insult. This highlights how even the most common gestures are shaped by local customs and historical context, underscoring the rich diversity of non-verbal communication and how a gesture learned in one context, like using a language learning app, might have different nuances when used in a new cultural setting.
