The story of VELCRO® Brand fasteners begins in 1941 with Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral. After a hunting trip in the Alps with his dog, he noticed that both his pants and his dog's fur were covered in stubborn burdock burrs. Rather than simply brushing them off, de Mestral's engineering curiosity was piqued, prompting him to examine the burrs under a microscope.

Nature's Blueprint: Hooks and Loops

Under magnification, de Mestral observed that the burrs were covered in hundreds of tiny, resilient hooks, perfectly designed to latch onto anything with a loop, like fabric threads or animal fur. This remarkable natural mechanism, a process known as biomimicry, sparked an audacious idea: to replicate this ingenious fastening system artificially.

A Decade of Dedication and Nylon

Translating nature's design into a practical product was no small feat; it took de Mestral nearly a decade of relentless experimentation. He initially tried cotton but found it too weak, eventually discovering that nylon, a synthetic fiber, offered the ideal combination of durability and flexibility. The real challenge lay in mechanizing the creation of the thousands of tiny hooks, which he ultimately achieved by inventing a specialized device inspired by barbershop clippers.

The Birth of a Brand and a Common Misconception

De Mestral filed his idea for a patent in Switzerland in 1951, which was granted in 1954. The U.S. patent followed in 1955. He named his invention VELCRO®, a portmanteau of the French words 'velours' (velvet) and 'crochet' (hook). While many believe VELCRO® was invented by NASA for the space program, this is a common myth. NASA did extensively use VELCRO® fasteners in the 1960s for the Apollo missions, securing equipment and personal items in zero gravity, which significantly boosted its popularity, but the invention itself predates NASA's involvement.

Beyond the Trademark: Hook-and-Loop's Ubiquity

Initially, VELCRO® fasteners struggled to find widespread adoption, particularly in fashion, due to their aesthetic. However, its utility eventually led to diverse applications in industries from medical (blood pressure cuffs) to automotive (floor mats) and sporting goods (ski wear). When de Mestral's original patent expired in 1978, a flood of generic 'hook-and-loop fasteners' entered the market. It's important to note that VELCRO® is a brand name and company, not the generic term for all such fastening systems, a distinction the company actively works to maintain.
