A Walk in the Woods, a Brilliant Idea

The ubiquitous fastening system we know as Velcro owes its existence to a hunting trip taken by Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1941. As he and his Irish Pointer hiked through the Jura mountains, de Mestral noticed burrs stubbornly clinging to both his wool trousers and his dog's fur. This seemingly mundane observation sparked a profound curiosity about why these prickly seeds held on so tightly.

Microscopic Inspiration and Years of Innovation

Upon returning home, de Mestral examined the burrs under a microscope, revealing thousands of tiny hooks that efficiently latched onto the microscopic loops in fabric and fur. Inspired by this natural mechanism of biomimicry, he dedicated years to replicating it with manufactured materials. After extensive experimentation, he found that nylon was the ideal material for creating both the durable hooks and resilient loops, eventually securing a patent for his 'Velvet Type Fabric and Method of Producing the Same' in 1955.
