Jamming the System: The Birth of QWERTY

In the 1870s, Christopher Latham Sholes, a newspaper editor and printer, developed one of the earliest typewriters. His initial designs often featured an alphabetical key arrangement, but rapid typing frequently caused the mechanical typebars to jam. To mitigate this issue, Sholes, with assistance from Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soulé, devised a new layout that strategically separated commonly used letter pairs, making it less likely for adjacent typebars to clash and jam the machine.

From Typewriters to Touchscreens: QWERTY's Enduring Legacy

The QWERTY layout debuted on the Sholes and Glidden typewriter, sold by E. Remington and Sons starting in 1874, and gained significant popularity with the Remington No. 2 of 1878, which introduced the shift key for upper and lower case letters. While often mistakenly believed to have been designed to slow typists down, the layout actually aimed to reduce jams and, in doing so, allowed for more efficient typing by encouraging alternating hand usage. Despite the development of more 'efficient' layouts like Dvorak, QWERTY's early adoption and widespread training programs by manufacturers like Remington solidified its status as the universal standard that persists across computers and smartphones today.
