The phrase, an admonition to 'mind your manners,' 'mind your language,' or 'be on your best behaviour,' dates back at least to the mid-18th century, yet no single definitive explanation has emerged.

Printers, Pints, and Polite Conduct

Several popular theories attempt to shed light on the idiom's birth. One suggests it originated in printing houses, where apprentice typesetters had to carefully distinguish between the visually similar lowercase 'p' and 'q' lead types to avoid errors, especially as they appear reversed when setting. Another oft-cited theory points to 17th-century English pubs, where bartenders would supposedly keep tallies of 'pints' and 'quarts' consumed by patrons on a chalkboard, reminding them to 'mind their p's and q's'—either to settle their tabs or to watch their alcohol intake.

Beyond the Workshop and Tavern

However, other interpretations exist. Some scholars propose it served as a reminder to schoolchildren learning to differentiate the letters 'p' and 'q,' which can be confusing for young learners. A lesser-known theory even suggests it's a shortened form of 'pleases' and 'thank-yous,' an instruction to mind one's manners by being polite. The phrase's earliest known appearance in print, in a 1774 letter by Lord Chesterfield, where he advises his son to 'mind your p's and q's' when dancing, complicates the more literal theories, suggesting it referred to being precise and careful in one's movements or general conduct.
