An Accidental Spark

The modern friction match, a tool for easily starting fire, was first invented by English chemist and apothecary John Walker. In 1826 or 1827, while preparing a lighting mixture, a stick he had used for stirring chemicals accidentally scraped against his hearth and caught fire.

From 'Friction Lights' to Safety Matches

Walker's initial 'Friction Lights' were made of wooden splints dipped in sulfur and tipped with a mixture of antimony trisulfide and potassium chlorate, igniting when drawn through folded sandpaper. He sold his first box of these matches in April 1827 but never patented his invention, believing it should benefit the public. This allowed others to quickly replicate and improve upon his work, leading to the development of early, more dangerous phosphorus matches.

The Dawn of Safety

The real breakthrough in match safety came in 1844 when Swedish chemist Gustaf Erik Pasch invented the safety match. Pasch's innovation separated the reactive ingredients, placing red phosphorus on a special striking surface on the matchbox, rather than on the match head itself, which significantly reduced the risk of unintentional ignition and addressed the toxicity of earlier white phosphorus matches.
