At the turn of the 20th century, public health officials grew increasingly alarmed by the widespread use of communal drinking vessels—shared tin dippers and glasses at public water fountains, schools, and train stations. These common cups were identified as major vectors for spreading contagious diseases like tuberculosis, colds, and flu.

The Inventor and His 'Health Kup'

In 1907, Boston lawyer Lawrence Luellen developed the innovative solution: a disposable paper cup. His invention was a two-piece paper cup designed for single use, explicitly to address the escalating hygiene concerns. Initially, he aptly named his creation the 'Health Kup.'

From 'Health Kup' to 'Dixie Cup'

Luellen partnered with businessman Hugh Moore, and together they launched companies like the American Water Supply Company to produce and market these sanitary cups, often alongside ice-cooled water-vending machines. Public awareness campaigns, bolstered by scientific studies like biologist Alvin Davison's sensational 1908 article 'Death in School Drinking Cups,' led to bans on common drinking cups across many states. The demand for individual drinking vessels soared, particularly after the devastating 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. In 1919, seeking a more memorable name, Hugh Moore rebranded the 'Health Kup' as the 'Dixie Cup,' borrowing the name from a popular New York doll company.

Beyond Hygiene: Evolution and Myths

Early paper cups were often coated with wax for waterproofing, while later innovations in the 1930s, particularly by the Dixie Cup Company, led to cups with plastic linings designed for hot beverages. A common myth is that paper cups are not recyclable due to their plastic lining. However, many modern paper cups can be recycled in specialized facilities that separate the paper fibers from the coating, and new plant-based linings are making some cups industrially compostable.
