The modern t-shirt traces its earliest roots to the late 19th century, evolving from the one-piece 'union suit' underwear. Workers in hot environments began cutting these full-body garments in half, creating a two-piece undergarment with a top long enough to tuck in. The first mass-produced t-shirt in the United States was officially introduced in 1913 by the U.S. Navy, becoming a standard white, buttonless, crew-neck undershirt for sailors, prized for its quick-drying, breathable cotton fabric suitable for tropical climates.

A Name is Born, An Icon Emerges

The actual term "t-shirt" officially entered the English language in 1920, making its literary debut in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel This Side of Paradise. While initially an undergarment, by the 1940s and 50s, WWII veterans often wore their undershirts as casual outerwear, leading to a cultural shift. The t-shirt's transformation into a symbol of youthful rebellion and cool was solidified by actors like Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire (1950) and James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), who famously sported the garment as a standalone fashion statement. The 1960s then saw the rise of the graphic tee, enabled by multicolor screen-printing technology, turning the simple shirt into a canvas for self-expression, advertising, and protest.
