The Pre-Gillette Predicament

For centuries, men relied on straight razors, formidable 'cutthroat' blades that demanded significant skill, constant stropping, and occasional honing by professionals to maintain their sharpness. Home shaving was inconvenient and carried considerable risk for the untrained individual, making regular trips to the barber a necessity for many.

A 'Throw Away' Idea

The visionary behind the modern safety razor was King C. Gillette, a traveling salesman who, in 1895, experienced a moment of frustration while trying to sharpen his dull permanent razor blade. Inspired by his previous employer's advice to invent a product that would be 'used and thrown away,' Gillette envisioned a thin, sharp, and inexpensive disposable steel blade. He filed for a patent in 1901.

From Idea to Empire

Initially, metallurgists at MIT dismissed Gillette's idea, claiming it was impossible to produce steel thin, hard, and inexpensive enough for his concept. However, with the expertise of MIT-trained engineer William Emery Nickerson, a viable manufacturing process was perfected by 1903. The U.S. Patent for their double-edged safety razor was officially granted on November 15, 1904, and sales soared, particularly after the U.S. military included Gillette razors in soldiers' kits during World War I, cementing its status as a global household staple.
