The Black Gold of Borrowdale

The story of the modern pencil began unexpectedly in 1564 when a massive deposit of pure graphite was discovered near Seathwaite Fell in Borrowdale, Cumbria, England, after a storm uprooted trees. Initially mistaken for lead, the soft, dark mineral was first used by local shepherds to mark their sheep. Its exceptional purity meant it could be sawn into solid sticks, making it incredibly valuable not only for writing but also for lining cannon molds, leading to heavily guarded mines and even a 'black market' for the material.

From String to Wood to Modern "Lead"

Early graphite sticks were crude and messy, often wrapped in string or sheepskin for easier handling. Around 1560, an Italian couple, Simonio and Lyndiana Bernacotti, are credited with creating what is considered the first wood-cased pencil by hollowing out juniper wood and inserting graphite. However, the modern manufacturing process that allowed for varying hardness levels was developed in 1795 by French inventor Nicolas-Jacques Conté. Tasked by Napoleon to create pencils without relying on British graphite imports during wartime, Conté mixed powdered graphite with clay and fired it, a method still fundamental to pencil production today.
