For millennia, personal hygiene after using the toilet involved a fascinating array of materials. Ancient Romans utilized a communal sponge on a stick, stored in salt water or vinegar, while early Greeks sometimes used pottery shards or pebbles. Depending on geography and socioeconomic status, people also commonly employed leaves, grass, moss, animal fur, corn cobs, seashells, or even rags and wool.

China's Pioneering Paper for Personal Use

The true origin of paper for hygiene actually predates Western commercial toilet paper by over a thousand years, tracing back to China. Historical records indicate paper being used for personal cleaning as early as the 6th century AD. By the 14th century, specifically manufactured toilet paper was mass-produced for the Chinese imperial court, with records noting the production of large, perfumed sheets for the royal family.

The Rise of Commercial Toilet Paper

Despite early Chinese innovations, commercial toilet paper didn't appear in the Western world until 1857, when American Joseph Gayetty introduced "Gayetty's Medicated Paper for the Water-Closet". These aloe-infused flat sheets were initially marketed as a medical product but struggled for popularity, as many Americans preferred free options like old newspapers and catalogs. The perforated toilet paper roll, familiar today, was patented later in 1871 by Zeth Wheeler and popularized by the Scott Paper Company in 1890.
