Ancient Reverence for Evergreens

Long before Christmas became a widely celebrated holiday, ancient civilizations across Europe revered evergreen plants as powerful symbols of life and hope during the darkest days of winter. These cultures, including the Romans during their Saturnalia festival, Norse, and Germanic peoples, used evergreens to symbolize endurance, ward off evil spirits, and celebrate the anticipation of spring's return after the winter solstice.

Germanic Roots and Christian Adaptation

The tradition of bringing and decorating an actual tree indoors is most commonly traced to 16th-century Germany, where devout Christians began adorning trees in their homes. The practice is sometimes associated with the Protestant reformer Martin Luther, who is said to have first added lighted candles to an evergreen, symbolizing stars or the light of Christ entering the world. Early decorations often included edible items like apples, nuts, and sweets, evolving into the baubles and lights we know today.
