An Editorial Inside Joke

The universally recognized word 'OK' first appeared in print on March 23, 1839, in The Boston Morning Post newspaper. It was introduced as part of a satirical article by editor Charles Gordon Greene, who used 'o.k.' as an abbreviation for 'oll korrect,' a deliberate misspelling of 'all correct.' This playful misspelling was part of a popular fad among educated youth in the late 1830s for creating humorous abbreviations and intentional misspellings in print.

From Satire to Slogan

While initially an inside joke, 'OK' gained significant traction and widespread recognition during the 1840 American presidential campaign. Supporters of incumbent President Martin Van Buren, whose nickname was 'Old Kinderhook' (based on his hometown of Kinderhook, New York), adopted 'OK' as a campaign slogan and formed 'O.K. Clubs.' This political association cemented the term's place in the American lexicon, moving it from a fleeting fad to a ubiquitous expression of approval. Many other theories regarding its origin, such as '0 killed' from Civil War reports or derivations from Greek, French, or African languages, lack substantial historical evidence.
