A $15 Debt and a Piece of Wire

The modern safety pin was invented by American mechanic Walter Hunt in 1849. Legend has it that Hunt, a prolific inventor, was twisting an 8-inch piece of brass wire while contemplating how to pay off a $15 debt he owed to a friend. Within a few hours, he devised a design featuring a coiled spring, a sharp point, and a clasp to cover it, preventing accidental pricks.

A Quick Sale, a Lasting Legacy

Hunt patented his 'dress pin' (U.S. Patent No. 6,281) on April 10, 1849, and immediately sold the rights for $400 to W.R. Grace and Company. While this seemingly small sum paid off his debt with a significant amount left over, the company that acquired his patent went on to make millions from the ingenious and practical design, which remains largely unchanged today.

Beyond the Modern Invention: Ancient Precursors

While Walter Hunt is credited with the modern safety pin, the concept of a garment fastener with a protective clasp isn't entirely new. Ancient Greeks and Romans utilized devices called 'fibulae,' which were often elaborate brooches with hinged or spring-based mechanisms to secure clothing. However, Hunt's innovation was the streamlined, single-piece wire design that combined the spring and a secured catch, making it a distinct and highly functional improvement.
