The Scholar Behind the Name

Our journey begins in the 9th century during the Islamic Golden Age with Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī, a Persian polymath who was a central figure at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. Al-Khwārizmī, born around 780 CE, made profound contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and geography. His dedication to systematizing knowledge laid the groundwork for many scientific advancements we still rely on today.

The Birth of 'Algorism'

Al-Khwārizmī authored a pivotal Arabic treatise around 825 CE that explained the use of Hindu-Arabic numerals (0-9) and the decimal system, which were far more efficient than Roman numerals. When this work was translated into Latin in the early 12th century, its title became 'Algoritmi de numero Indorum,' meaning 'Al-Khwarizmi on the Hindu Art of Reckoning'. The Latinized version of his name, 'Algoritmi,' thus gave birth to the term 'algorism,' which referred to the rules for performing arithmetic using this new decimal system.

Evolution to 'Algorithm'

The word 'algorism' entered the English language by the early 13th century. Over time, under the influence of the Greek word 'arithmos' (meaning 'number'), 'algorism' transformed into 'algorithm' in the 15th century. However, its modern meaning—a precise, step-by-step procedure for solving a problem—didn't fully crystallize until the early 20th century, gaining widespread use with the advent of computers in the 1950s.

Beyond Modern Computing: Debunking Misconceptions

While 'algorithm' is often associated solely with computer science and digital technologies, its conceptual roots are far more ancient. Long before Al-Khwārizmī, ancient civilizations like the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks used systematic procedures for mathematical tasks, such as the Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor. Therefore, the idea of a step-by-step method to solve problems is not a recent invention, but a fundamental aspect of human problem-solving that has evolved over millennia.
