An Ancient Symbol of Status, Not Storms

The earliest documented use of umbrellas dates back to ancient Egypt around 1200 BC, where large sunshades were held over pharaohs and deities, signifying their importance and protecting them from the sun's scorching rays. These initial designs, made from materials like papyrus or palm leaves, were not built to withstand rain. Ancient China, as early as 2400 BC, also employed umbrellas as a mark of wealth and status, often crafted from silk or paper.

From Roman Fashion to European Rain Protection

The Romans later adopted the 'umbella' (little shade) from the Greeks, where it became a fashionable accessory for women seeking sun protection. For most of its extensive history—at least three millennia—the umbrella was predominantly a shade instrument and a class indicator, as pale skin was a sign of nobility. It wasn't until around the 11th century BC in China that waterproof umbrellas, made by waxing and lacquering paper, emerged for protection against rain. In Europe, the 'parapluie' (rain umbrella) began to appear in France in the 1660s when sun umbrellas were coated with wax, but the waterproof rain umbrella only became a common everyday item in the 18th and 19th centuries.
