Chewing Through Prehistory and Ancient Civilizations

The earliest known evidence of chewing gum dates back over 9,700 years to a Neolithic hunter-gatherer community in Scandinavia, where birch bark tar was chewed for its antiseptic properties and potential to relieve toothaches. Ancient Greeks chewed mastic gum, derived from the resin of the mastic tree, to clean teeth and freshen breath, with Hippocrates even noting its medicinal benefits for digestion. Across the Atlantic, the Mayans and Aztecs in Mesoamerica were adept at extracting chicle, a natural latex from the sapodilla tree, which they chewed for various reasons, including curbing hunger, freshening breath, and as a sealant.

The Rise of Modern Chewing Gum

The commercialization of chewing gum primarily took root in the United States in the mid-19th century, initially using spruce resin, a practice adopted from Native Americans. A significant turning point came in the 1860s when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna introduced chicle to American inventor Thomas Adams, initially hoping it could be a rubber substitute. After failed attempts at making rubber, Adams flavored the chicle and, in 1871, successfully marketed it as Adams New York Chewing Gum, laying the foundation for the modern chewing gum industry.
